Inside the Legend: Interview with Babe Ruth

by | Apr 18, 2025 | Inside the Legend

Lefty Gomez: Hey there, folks! I’m Lefty Gomez, and I’m thrilled to sit down today with my old pal, the one and only Babe Ruth, for my Inside the Legend blog. Babe, it’s been a while—how’s the Sultan of Swat doing these days?

Babe Ruth: Lefty, my friend, I’m doin’ swell! Always a pleasure to chew the fat with you. I’ve been keepin’ busy, you know, swingin’ a bat in my dreams and enjoyin’ some good ol’ cigars. How ‘bout you—still scribblin’ away?

Lefty Gomez: You bet, Babe! Let’s dive right in. You had an incredible career, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing. What kept you driven and eager to succeed, especially when times got tough?

Babe Ruth: Well, Lefty, I’ll tell ya—I loved the game somethin’ fierce. Even when things got rough, like when I was pitchin’ for the Red Sox and we hit a slump, I just thought about the fellas in the stands cheerin’ for me. I didn’t wanna let ‘em down, you know? And I had a fire in my belly to prove I could do it—whether I was pitchin’ or swingin’ for the fences. When I got traded to the Yankees, some folks doubted me, but I just kept my eye on the ball and told myself, “Babe, you’re gonna show ‘em what you’re made of!” That’s what kept me goin’.

Lefty Gomez: That’s the spirit that made you a legend! Now, I’ve heard stories about players and their quirks—did you have any pre-game habits or little superstitions you stuck to before big games?

Babe Ruth: Oh sure, Lefty! I had a couple things I liked to do. Before a big game, I’d always make sure to have a big ol’ breakfast—eggs, bacon, the works. Gotta have fuel for those home runs, right? And I’d always tap my bat on the plate three times before steppin’ into the box. Don’t know why, but it felt right—like I was tellin’ the pitcher, “I’m ready for ya!” Some fellas laughed, but when I started hittin’ dingers, they stopped laughin’ pretty quick.

Lefty Gomez: I can just picture you tapping that bat, grinning ear to ear! Speaking of balance, you were larger than life on the field—how’d you manage to juggle your personal life with the grind of being a pro ballplayer?

Babe Ruth: That was a tough one, Lefty. Bein’ on the road so much, I missed a lotta time with my family. My daughter, Dorothy, and my wife, Claire, they were my rocks, but I wasn’t always there like I wanted to be. I tried to make up for it by bringin’ ‘em to games when I could—they loved watchin’ me play. And after a long day at the park, I’d unwind with a cold beer and some laughs with the boys. It wasn’t perfect, but I did my best to keep ‘em smilin’. Family’s everything, you know?

Lefty Gomez: Absolutely, Babe. You always had a big heart. Now, let’s talk about rivalries—were there any teams or players that really lit a fire under you, and how’d you handle those matchups?

Babe Ruth: Oh, you bet there were! The Detroit Tigers always got me goin’—especially when I was with the Yankees. Ty Cobb, that ol’ firecracker, he’d try to get under your skin with his chatter, but I’d just grin and say, “Watch this, Ty!” I’d dig in and swing for the moon. Those games were a battle, and I loved every minute of it. I’d tell myself, “Babe, you’re gonna hit one outta the park just to shut ‘em up!” And more often than not, I did.

Lefty Gomez: I bet Cobb didn’t know what hit him! You’ve inspired so many, Babe—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to young athletes dreamin’ of followin’ in your footsteps?

Babe Ruth: I’d tell ‘em, don’t be afraid to swing big, kid! You’re gonna strike out sometimes—heck, I did plenty—but you gotta keep swingin’. Love the game, work hard, and don’t let nobody tell ya you can’t do it. I came from nothin’, a kid from the streets of Baltimore, and I made it to the Hall of Fame ‘cause I never gave up. So don’t you give up neither!

Lefty Gomez: Words to live by, my friend. Let’s go back to the beginning—what got you into baseball in the first place, and who were the guys you looked up to as a kid?

Babe Ruth: Baseball was my escape, Lefty. I grew up rough, you know—sent to a boys’ home ‘cause I was a bit of a troublemaker. But the fellas there, like Brother Matthias, they showed me the game. I’d watch ‘em pitch and hit, and I thought, “I wanna do that!” As for role models, I didn’t have many heroes back then, but I’d hear stories about fellas like Christy Mathewson and Honus Wagner. They were giants, and I wanted to be a giant too. So I picked up a bat and never looked back.

Lefty Gomez: And the rest is history! Your success changed the game forever—how did all that fame and glory impact your family and the folks who supported you along the way?

Babe Ruth: It meant the world to ‘em, Lefty. My folks, they never thought I’d amount to much, but when I started hittin’ home runs and the crowds were chantin’ my name, they couldn’t believe it. My daughter, Dorothy, she’d beam with pride every time she saw me play. And Claire, she kept me grounded—always remindin’ me to stay humble, even when I was breakin’ records. I owe a lot to the fans too—they made me who I am. I’d sign autographs ‘til my hand hurt ‘cause I knew how much it meant to ‘em.

Lefty Gomez: That’s what makes you the Babe—always givin’ back. One last question: what’s the biggest lesson baseball taught you that you carry with you even now?

Babe Ruth: Baseball taught me to laugh at myself, Lefty. You’re gonna mess up—maybe you’ll swing at a bad pitch or trip over your own feet—but you gotta laugh, dust yourself off, and get back in the game. Life’s too short to take it all so serious. Play hard, have fun, and eat a good hot dog every now and then—that’s the Babe Ruth way!

Lefty Gomez: I love that, Babe! Thanks for sittin’ down with me today. It’s been a real treat hearin’ your stories. Folks, that’s all for this edition of Inside the Legend. ‘Til next time—keep swingin’ for the fences!

Babe Ruth: Thanks, Lefty! See ya at the ballpark!
