Inside the Legend: Interview with Lawrence Taylor

by | Apr 21, 2025 | Inside the Legend

Lefty Gomez: Hey there, folks! I’m Lefty Gomez, and I’m pumped to be sitting down today with my good buddy, the one and only Lawrence Taylor, for my Inside the Legend blog. LT, man, it’s been too long—how’s the greatest linebacker to ever play the game doing?

Lawrence Taylor: Lefty, my man! I’m doin’ great, thanks for havin’ me. You know I’m always ready to talk some football—and maybe a little trash while we’re at it! How you holdin’ up, scribblin’ all those stories?

Lefty Gomez: I’m keepin’ busy, LT, especially when I get to chat with legends like you! Let’s jump right in. Can you take us back to a game-changing moment in your career that really set the course for who you became?

Lawrence Taylor: Oh, for sure, Lefty. I’d say it was my rookie year, 1981, with the Giants. We were playin’ the Eagles in Philly, and I sacked Randall Cunningham—back when he was still a young gun. I hit him so hard, I swear the whole stadium felt it! That game, I had three sacks and a forced fumble, and it was like, bam, I knew I belonged in the NFL. The league started takin’ notice, and I realized I could dominate. That moment lit a fire in me, man—I wanted to be the best every single snap after that.

Lefty Gomez: That’s the LT we all know! Speaking of that dominance, your success was massive—two Super Bowls, Defensive Player of the Year, all that. How did all that glory impact your family and the folks who had your back?

Lawrence Taylor: It meant everything to them, Lefty. My mom, Iris, and my brothers—they were my rock growin’ up in Williamsburg, Virginia. We didn’t have much, you know? So when I made it big, it was like I lifted the whole family up. I bought my mom a house, made sure my brothers were set. They were so proud, man—my mom would tell everybody, “That’s my boy out there terrorizin’ quarterbacks!” But it wasn’t always easy on ‘em. The fame, the pressure—it brought some tough times too. I had my struggles off the field, and that weighed on them. But they never stopped supportin’ me, and that love kept me grounded.

Lefty Gomez: Family’s everything, ain’t it? Now, you played in the ‘80s and ‘90s—football’s changed a ton since then. What’s your take on how the game’s evolved, and what changes do you see as good or bad?

Lawrence Taylor: Man, the game’s a whole different beast now, Lefty. Back in my day, we hit hard—no holds barred. Now, they got all these rules protectin’ quarterbacks, and I get it, safety’s important. That’s a positive change, ‘cause I don’t want guys gettin’ hurt bad. But I think they went too far sometimes—let the boys play, you know? The game’s more pass-heavy now, which is cool, but I miss the grind of a good run game. Defenses like ours in ‘86, with me, Carl Banks, and Harry Carson—we’d stuff the run and then come for the QB. Today, it’s all about speed and spread offenses, which makes it tougher for linebackers to just hunt like I did. I’d still eat, though—don’t get it twisted!

Lefty Gomez: I bet you would, LT! You had some bumps in the road—injuries, tough seasons. How did you deal with those highs and lows throughout your career?

Lawrence Taylor: It wasn’t easy, Lefty. I played through a lotta pain—had a torn pectoral in ‘88, still played and got 15.5 sacks that year! My motto was, if I can walk, I can play. But the setbacks off the field, like my battles with addiction, those hit harder. I had to dig deep, man. My teammates, like Phil Simms and Bill Parcells—they kept me in check, pushed me to show up. And I’d look at my kids and think, “I gotta be better for them.” It was about findin’ that inner fire, remindin’ myself I was LT—the baddest dude on the field. You can’t let the lows define you; you gotta keep swingin’.

Lefty Gomez: That resilience is why you’re a legend. Lookin’ back, were there any moments or achievements in your career that even caught you off guard, something that made you say, “Man, did I really just do that?”

Lawrence Taylor: Oh yeah, Lefty! I’d say the 1986 season, when we won Super Bowl XXI. I was named MVP of the whole league that year—first defensive player to do that since 1971. I had 20.5 sacks, and in the Super Bowl, I was all over John Elway, just messin’ up the Broncos’ whole game plan. When they handed me that MVP trophy, I was like, “Me? A linebacker?” I mean, I knew I was good, but that kinda recognition—it blew me away. Made me realize how much I changed the game for defensive players.

Lefty Gomez: You sure did change the game! What kept you driven and fired up for success, especially when things got tough?

Lawrence Taylor: It was about pride, Lefty. I didn’t just wanna be good—I wanted to be the best ever. Even when I was hurtin’ or dealin’ with off-field mess, I’d step on that field and think, “Ain’t nobody gonna outwork LT.” I fed off the crowd, too—hear ‘em chantin’ my name at Giants Stadium, that got me goin’. And I had a chip on my shoulder, always. Grew up with nothin’, so I played like I had somethin’ to prove every down. Parcells used to get in my face, too—he’d yell, “LT, you gonna let that guy block you?” Man, that’d light me up—I’d be ready to destroy somebody after that!

Lefty Gomez: That fire’s what made you LT! One last question: who was the toughest quarterback you ever faced, and how’d you get in their head?

Lawrence Taylor: Toughest QB? Gotta be Joe Montana, Lefty. That man was cool as ice—never rattled, even when I was comin’ for him. We played the 49ers in the playoffs a few times, like in ‘84 and ‘90. I’d get a sack or two, but he’d still make plays, throwin’ those dimes to Jerry Rice. To get in his head, I’d talk a little trash—let him know I was comin’ all game. But Joe, he’d just smile and say, “Good hit, LT.” I respected that. Made me wanna hit him harder next time, though! Took ‘til the 1990 NFC Championship for us to finally beat ‘em—man, that felt good.

Lefty Gomez: LT, you’re a storyteller, my friend! Thanks for sittin’ down with me today—it’s been a blast hearin’ your tales. Folks, that’s all for this edition of Inside the Legend. ‘Til next time—keep bringin’ the heat like LT!

Lawrence Taylor: Thanks, Lefty! Always a good time, man. Y’all keep watchin’ football—and don’t forget who changed the game!
