Pro Football Hall of Fame

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton, Ohio just off Highway 77.
The Hall was opened on September 7, 1963, the building was first opened to the public a little over one year after groundbreaking.
There are currently 346 members in the NFL Hall of Fame of which 287 are ex-players, 26 are head coaches, and 27 are contributors.

Canton is the county seat of Stark County, Ohio, located 60 miles south of Cleveland in Northeast Ohio. The 2020 census recorded Canton’s population as 73,007.

1920 The Hall of Fame was founding in Canton, Ohio on September 17.
1963 The building opened to visitors on September 7, 1963 after having broken ground on August 11, 1962.
1966 Was the only year that the Hall of Fame game was not played in Canton. That year the game was cancelled.
1971, 1978, and 1995 Expansions: The museum has undergone several expansions over the years. By 2007 it consisted of five buildings and over 83,000 square feet.
2009 The Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery opened at a cost of $2.4 million.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame generally inducts from four to seven inductees in August of each year, but the selection process begins more than a year earlier when the Selection Committee takes it first swing at paring the candidates to 25 semi-finalists and then 15 finalists of current era football players. The finalists ate joined by three others spelected from players from over 25 years ago and contributors (like Owners and Officials).

On Selection Saturday (the day before the Super Bowl), the 48 members of the Selection Committee meet to select the next induction class. To be selected an inductee must show up on 80% of the ballots of the Selection Committee. If they are an ex-player, they must have been retired for at least 5 years.

The Selection Committee is primarily made up of members of the media from cities that have current NFL teams. There are also 15 members selected at-large.
